Program Description:

Serving with LU Send Now

Thank you for your interest in being a part of LU Send Now. It is Send Now’s mission to empower students to show the love of Jesus by alleviating urgent humanitarian needs. It is our goal to get students trained and equipped to be able to respond at a moment's notice. There are two teams for which students can apply: the Domestic Team and the International and Domestic Team. Students who desire to serve with Send Now, must submit an application and meet basic requirements.

Qualifications

Domestic Team
In order to qualify for the LU Send Now Domestic Team you must:

  1. 18 years of age or older in order to participate in response efforts which require travel off Liberty’s campus. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to attend.

  3. Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in order to be eligible to participate in a response effort. This will be verified in the application process. He or she must be in good standing in all of his/her classes in order to be deployed for a response effort.

  4. Acquire a US Passport & other government issued photo ID
  5. Fulfill certain health requirements

A $100 deposit is the only cost a student needs to cover in order to participate in LU Send Now. If a student is chosen to be a part of the team, Liberty University covers all expenses such as equipment, training, food, lodging, transportation, and any other non-foreseeable expenses that a student may incur while on a Send Now deployment. This removes the financial barrier that separates students who genuinely want to help those in need but do not have the financial means to do so nor the time to raise the funds on such short notice. In addition to the financial burden being lifted, the Provost has granted students 5 excused absences per semester. With the financial and time barriers lifted, LU Send Now can send students with little notice in the event an opportunity arises.

Send Now is passionate about raising up the next generation of disaster relief responders and understands training to be critical in achieving that goal. Once a student is placed on a team, he/she is required to complete a three hour Send Now required training. It will be offered on week nights throughout the semester and only needs to be completed once during a student’s Send Now career. The training will cover:  Introduction to the LU Send Now Team, introduction to disaster relief, what does it look like to serve on a Send Now team,  health and safety principles, helping people who have been affected by disaster, cultural intelligence, and spiritual warfare.

Send Now will also offer and promote additional non-required trainings to students that will further develop their ability to be more effective in disaster and crisis situations. Completing these trainings may give students different credentials which may allow them to serve in unique ways. We highly suggest and encourage students to take advantage of as many training as they can. The more trained and credentialed a student is, the more likely they will be placed on a team and be a greater benefit to those they serve and serve with.

Once a student pays their $100 deposit and completes the necessary training, he or she will be on call to respond to help those who are affected by natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies.

To date, Send Now has worked very closely with Samaritans Purse, Southern Baptist Convention of Virginia, Baptist Global Response, the International Mission Board, Greater Europe Mission, and Gleaning for the World. When a natural disaster or humanitarian emergency does happen, LU Send Now connects with our partner organizations on the field to assess the needs and our role in helping meet them. Our partners oversee a majority of ground logistics including: identifying specific relief needs and volunteer sites, volunteer lodging, meals, equipment, site supervision, and any additional training the teams may need.

LU Send Now’s responsibilities include: building a team of students, notifying available leaders, making travel arrangements, acquiring necessary equipment, maintaining communication with team members and partner organizations, and transporting students to the volunteer site. Students are responsible for notifying their professors (and employers if they have jobs) that he or she is missing class (and work), attending any additional training, filling out any necessary additional forms, packing, and meeting the team at an on-campus departure point.
