Leading with LU Serve Now

Thank you for your interest in being a leader for LU Serve Now. LU Serve Now is the University's quick response team for urgent humanitarian needs. The mission of Serve Now is to empower students to show the love of Jesus by alleviating urgent humanitarian needs. It is our goal to get students trained and equipped to be able to respond at a moments notice to help those in their most desperate hour. Our leaders have played a vital role in the student's experience, safety, and spiritual growth while on a deployment.

Qualifications

In order to be a leader for Serve Now, you must meet certain basic qualifications:
  1. Be on staff or faculty with Liberty University
  2. Be 21 years old or older
  3. Submit an application
  4. Complete an in-person interview with Serve Now Staff
  5. Have permission from your supervisor
  6. Complete all necessary requirements below
If you'd like to be a part of leading students who are equipped to respond to needs around the world whenever the moment comes, we'd invite you to submit an application.  Once you have completed this step,  you will receive an email confirming that we have received your application. LU Serve Now staff will review and process your application within two weeks’ time. Upon processing your application you will receive an email confirming your acceptance into the leadership program and a list of times available to choose from for a "next steps" meeting with one of the Serve Now Coordinators.
Once you have completed your next steps meeting, you must complete the following in order to be eligible for deployment:

Read Liberty University’s Travel Policies and Procedures

All Faculty and Staff that travel on University business are required to read and sign the Liberty University Travel Policy. If you’ve already completed this step, we want to remind you how important it is to know and abide by these policies and we encourage you to reread through them. Leaders will be held accountable to these policies on Serve Now trips.

Acquiring a P-Card

If you do not already have a P-Card you can acquire one by completing Finance 100 on the Pro Dev portal and applying for a P-Card through Procurement's webpage. Because of the nature of the Serve Now program, all leaders and co-leaders that travel with our teams must have a P-Card in their name. Often times teams can be split up during the day and all leaders are held responsible for the team's safety and well being. Thus, P-Cards are required for emergencies, food, supplies, etc. Cash advances are not an option with last minute trips such as Serve Now.
LU Serve Now will ensure that all leaders are requested budget access to Serve Now's budget for reconciling purposes in leading a team. Leaders are responsible for reconciling their own P-Card transactions and using the proper FOAPAL and activity code for the trip they lead. For more information on reconciling you can visit the Pro Dev portal for training.

Become an Approved Driver

Along with requiring a P-Card, all leaders in the Serve Now program must be Liberty University approved mini-bus drivers. You can begin the process of becoming an approved driver through Transit Services

Attend Training

All leaders accepted into the Serve Now program are required to attend the same training that the students are required to attend, "LU Serve Now Required Training". In addition, leaders are required to attend a leader training organized by the Serve Now Coordinators. Serve Now reserves the right to require any additional training throughout the year.

Being on Call

The nature of Serve Now is last minute deployments to assist in relief for natural disasters and humanitarian aid emergencies. Due to the time off required for this program, it is necessary to attain Supervisor consent to be a leader. We understand that your Supervisor can consent to your involvement but still reserves the right to deny participation in any given deployment. The participant’s Supervisor determines whether or not they will be required to take vacation time for a deployment.
Often times in the event of a deployment, an email will be sent to all the leaders seeking who is available to serve. Serve Now reserves the right to hand pick which available leaders would thrive in each deployment based on qualifications and experience.
