Best Semester - Australia Studies Centre

Brisbane, Australia

Program Overview

The Australia Studies Centre is located in the diverse city of Brisbane at Christian Heritage College. With its near-perfect climate and population of 1.8 million, Brisbane is a flourishing river city with modern districts, hip cafes and a thriving arts scene. Adventure ready; prepare to explore sites like the Moreton Bay Island, the Scenic Rim and North Stradbroke Island.

Together, ASC and CHC offer a range of challenging and engaging programs. Course curriculum is centered on a foundation of faith while exploring the connections of local as well as national tradition and culture.

At ASC, you’ll come face-to-face with some of God’s most impressive creations. But perhaps the most inspiring of your encounters will also be the most subtle. Because new discoveries at ASC come in all shapes and sizes. Unexpected friendships, newfound passions and unbelievable sights will all make your experience in Australia a world away from ordinary.

Academics

The Australia Studies Centre (ASC) is offered in partnership with Christian Heritage College (CHC), a CCCU affiliate member in Carindale, a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland. The ASC is designed to integrate the firsthand observation and study of Australian culture, history, religion, politics and Indigenous cultures together with experiential service learning and formal instruction in Christian Studies, Business, Ministries, Social Sciences and Education and Humanities.

The Australian school year is divided into two semesters, Semester 1 (Feb.-June) and Semester 2 (July-Nov.).

The program is comprised of two core units designed especially for ASC students and two elective units or an internship.

Core Courses
  • The View from Australia (required)
  • Required to choose 1: Australian Indigenous Worldviews OR Indigenous Cultures in Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand)
Elective Units
Students not selecting an internship should select two units from any of the following:
  • School of Christian Studies
  • School of Business
  • School of Education & Humanities
  • School of Liberal Arts, School of Ministries
  • School of Social Sciences
Internship
Students interested in the internship track should select one practicum from the list of Social Science internships and one co-requisite unit to accompany the practicum.  This is in place of selecting elective units described in the previous section.

Course Descriptions
View the Elective Units and Internship options in the ASC Unit Descriptions catalog. This document contains all of the units currently available to Australia Studies Centre (ASC) students from Christian Heritage College's catalogue of classes. Please note that not all of these units will be offered every semester. We will endeavour to provide the confirmed list of units for a given semester at least 3 months prior to orientation for that semester.

For more information, visit the Best Semester - ASC website.

Housing and Student Life

Students live with host families in Brisbane and its surroundings, enabling them to experience Australian life firsthand. Generally one student stays in each homestay. Families are urged to integrate students into normal family life as much as possible.  When appropriate, students should expect to help out around the house and plan to be home for most meals.

For more information about student life, including behavioral expectations, visit the Best Semester - ASC website.
